FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Installation of CompendiumNG

Is it possible to launch CompendiumNG from a thumbdrive or folder stored on a cloud service?

Yes, it is possible to run CompendiumNG form a thumbdrive or through a could storage service, even from multiple OS. Simply install CompendiumNG on one machine and then copy the installation folder onto a thumbdrive or into your cloud storage (such as Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.). Simply start CompendiumNG through Compendium.bat (Windows) or Compendium.sh (Linux). This will allow you to run CompendiumNG on other machines without having to download and install the program onto them.

I have installed CompendiumNG under Windows, but it won’t start due to missing ‘javaw’?

Thank you Michelle for providing the following two options to help Compendium locate Java:

  1. You could try adding the path to your Java installation bin folder directly into the compendium.bat file. The compendium.bat file is found in Compendium folder and can be edited with any simple text editor, so it would look something like: start /b C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\javaw -Xmx256m -classpath etc……
  2. You could leave the compendium.bat file alone but then, the main system path needs to point at the java bin folder where the javaw file is found so the compendium.bat can find it when it runs. It should have been added to your System PATH when you installed Java. So you could edit your System Path. Look at this document by the Java people helping explain how to do that.

Using CompendiumNG

How do I format links?

In CompendiumNG it is possible to set color, width and style for a link. To show the toolbar which edits these properties, select View->Toolbars->Reset toolbars to default. This is the only way to show the link format toolbar for now from the user interface (Jan 9, 2013). See also here.
